Gunnison under the gun
What a lovely afternoon we had last week at Gunnison Beach, us and a few hundred other scantily clad or bare beachgoers! It is unfortunate that there's so little money left for the Dept. of the Interior that they cannot afford lifeguards any more, especially now during the heart of the summer, forcing the brave swimmers to blatantly break the law by going in to the choppy, brownish-green ocean waters when the signs clearly said it was forbidden. The sign blamed it on rip currents and the water was notably rough, but I feel as though that was the excuse, not the cause.
A few dozen swimmers still did it, and along with lack of lifeguards we never saw any rangers either, so no enforcement. Chunks of dead jellyfish all over the surf was enough to keep me going any deeper than my knees anyway.
At least there were food concessions and the bathrooms and showers were available. Everyone was having a great time, and though alcohol is also against the rules, the high winds surely did not diminish the skunky scent of Doobie Brothers in the breeze. The rubber mat going out another hundred yards closer to the waves would've been helpful for the heavily-laden beach carts and those of us older folks with busted body parts, but now I'm nit-picking. Oh, to get the sights & sounds & smells of the ocean again! Virginia needs a nude beach SO BAD!
