Ok I tried using a cockring a few weeks back, how do you get it to

It depends. There are rigid ones (use lube with these), and there are ones that "stretch," then contour snugly around your dick and balls once it's on. (I use one made by Oxballs that's super stretchy and it's quite comfortable).
